Finding the best self cleaning litter box for large cats can be surprisingly difficult, especially when many automatic models are built with smaller, average sized cats in mind. Bigger breeds like Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Norwegian Forest Cats, or simply heavier, “chunky” cats need a litter box with more space, stronger sensors, and reliable cleaning cycles that won’t jam under extra weight.
While our best automatic litter boxes guide covers the top overall options, this article focuses specifically on what large cats require: bigger entryways, roomier interiors, sturdier motors, and waste systems that can handle more volume.
In this 2026 guide, we’ve tested and reviewed the top self cleaning litter boxes designed for big and heavy cats, comparing size, sensor reliability, odor control, cleaning performance and long term durability. Whether your cat is tall, long, fluffy, or simply on the heavier side, this list will help you find a model that’s safe, spacious, and built to last.

Meowant MW-SC02
The Meowant MW-SC02 is a practical option for homes with larger cats, combining a relatively roomy enclosed interior with automatic cleaning, app controls and improved litter containment.
Its enclosed self-cleaning design helps reduce daily maintenance, litter scatter and exposed waste while still offering useful space for many larger cats.
The enclosed layout may still feel restrictive for exceptionally large cats or those that are cautious around covered litter boxes.
- Roomy enclosed interior suitable for many larger cats

Its open-top layout removes much of the enclosed feeling of traditional automatic litter boxes, making it especially appealing for larger cats that need more usable space.
The open design and wider footprint require more floor space than many compact or fully enclosed automatic litter boxes.
- Open-top design gives larger cats easier entry and exit
- Roomy interior allows more comfortable turning and positioning
- Automatic cleaning reduces everyday scooping
- App monitoring helps track usage and maintenance
- Less enclosed than rotating globe-style litter boxes

It provides the main benefits of an automatic litter box in a larger-cat-friendly design without the premium price attached to more advanced models.
The materials and overall construction feel more basic than premium alternatives and may be less durable under frequent, heavy use.
- Spacious interior suitable for many larger or heavier cats

Buying Guide: What to Look for in a Self Cleaning Litter Box for Large Cats
Finding the right automatic litter box for a large cat means paying attention to features that guarantee comfort, safety, and long term performance. Here’s what matters most:
A spacious interior is essential. Large cats especially breeds like Maine Coons or simply overweight cats need room to enter, turn, and dig comfortably. Look for models with wide openings and high capacity bowls or chambers. Weight capacity also plays a big role; some devices max out at 15–17 lbs, which isn’t enough for many big cats.
Automation and cleaning consistency are equally important. A high performing self-cleaning system prevents clumps from sticking, reduces odors, and keeps the home smelling fresh. If you prefer data tracking or remote control, models with smartphone apps make monitoring usage much easier.
Finally, consider reliability and ongoing upkeep. A well designed system with affordable liners, easy access waste drawers, and sturdy parts keeps maintenance low. If you’re still comparing models by litter type and maintenance needs, our guide to the best litter for automatic litter boxes explains which litters clump cleanly and work best with self-cleaning systems. Conclusion: Which One Should you Choose?
The PETKIT Purobot Max Pro is ideal for owners who want maximum capacity and premium performance, while the PetCove model suits multi-cat homes that need consistent cleaning. If you’re on a budget, the Paruuntys option delivers surprising value without sacrificing space for bigger cats. And for those who want the largest capacity possible, the Ellenpent 90L box stands out.
Whichever model you choose, upgrading to a self cleaning system can make daily care easier, cleaner, and far more manageable, especially for households with big cats or multiple pets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are self cleaning litter boxes safe for large cats?
Yes, most self cleaning litter boxes are safe for large cats as long as they’re rated for higher weight limits and have roomy interiors. Look for models specifically designed for big or multi-cat households and always follow the manufacturer’s setup and safety instructions.
How do I know if a self cleaning litter box is big enough for my cat?
As a rule of thumb, your cat should be able to turn around comfortably inside the litter area without crouching or squeezing. Check the internal dimensions (not just external size) and compare them to your cat’s length from nose to base of tail, especially for large or long-bodied breeds.
Do large cats adapt well to automatic litter boxes?
Most large cats adapt well as long as the box feels stable, quiet, and spacious. Introduce the Litter Box for Large Cats gradually by placing it next to the old box, leaving it turned off at first, and letting your cat explore it at their own pace before enabling automatic cleaning cycles.
